In August 2025, Google and global submarine cable leader Prysmian Group officially launched the Unity 2 trans Pacific submarine cable system, with a total investment of over 1.2 billion US dollars, connecting California, Chiba, Japan, and Busan, South Korea, with a total length of about 9800 kilometers. It is expected to be put into operation in Q4 2027.

The system adopts a hybrid design of 12 pairs of optical fibers and hollow core optical fibers, with a single fiber capacity of 800Tb/s and a total design capacity of over 9.6Pb/s, which is three times that of the previous generation Unity submarine cable. All bandwidth is dedicated to Google Cloud and AI computing clusters, with a focus on supporting GPT-5 level large model cross continental training and real-time inference, significantly reducing cross Pacific network latency and costs, and becoming the world's first "AI exclusive submarine cable".
