Global fiber optic prices skyrocket in 2026, with Europe up 159% year-on-year, AI driven supply-demand imbalance
In April 2026, the UK Commodity Research Union (CRU) released its latest report stating that global fiber optic prices have continued to soar since Q4 2025. The price of G.652. D bare fiber in Europe reached 7.94 euros per core kilometer, an increase of 136% month on month and 159% year-on-year compared to January 2026; The North American market is experiencing a simultaneous surge, with orders scheduled until 2028.
The core reason is the explosive demand for AI data centers and the rigidity of optical rod production capacity: by 2026, the global fiber optic demand will be about 577 million core kilometers, with only 397 million core kilometers available for effective supply, resulting in a gap of 180 million core kilometers (16.4%). Overseas leaders (Corning, Sumitomo, Fujikura) are operating at full capacity, with an expansion cycle of 18-24 months. It is difficult to alleviate supply and demand in the short term, and high prices may continue until the end of 2027.
