In April 2025, the Japanese Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and Sumitomo Electric announced the world's first breakthrough: single fiber single band 1.02Pb/s (125 million MB/s) ultra high speed data transmission at a transmission distance of 1808 kilometers on a 19 core optical fiber with a standard outer diameter of 125 μ m, breaking the dual record of global fiber transmission speed and distance.

The technology adopts 180 wavelengths in the C+L band, biased multiple 16QAM, and 19 core spatial multiplexing, with a total capacity distance product of 1.86Eb/s · km, providing the next generation of ultra large capacity transmission solutions for current AI backbone networks and submarine optical cables, and supporting the bandwidth explosion demand of future global computing networks.
